THANK YOU STEVE NASH:~) I think that Steve Nash has it! If everyone could give back, what a better place this world would be. I think that this world needs more people to think like Steve and get rid of the bias and greed and help the underserved. Get article.

Athletes, or any employee, for that matter, are obligated to do one thing and one thing only: do a good job for your employer. That's the contract: we will pay you, and keep paying you, if you do a good job. Other than that, the employee (athlete) is not OBLIGATED to do anything else. Now, if they are so inclined, and WANT to donate time, money, or anything else to the community, congrats to them for being nice, helpful, altruistic - however you want to phrase it. Helping others should come from wanting to help them, from the goodness of your heart. Obligation has nothing to do with it.

I agree with many of the postings here that obligation is a very strong word when used in this sense; people should feel a desire rather than an obligation to give back to the communities that have supported them and those less fortunate. Athletes are ordinary human beings, they just often happen to be doing extraordinary things. In my opinion, this should not call for obligation to do anything, however it does provides a very unique platform to make a huge difference in the world, which thus often and thankfully increases the motivation to expand positive impact past our own daily surroundings.
I personally feel not a sense of obligation, but instead a desire to give back. I know that as an Olympian I am automatically viewed as a role model, whether I chose that role throughout my life or not. I deeply hope that all athletes will recognize that and chose to act in a way that benefits and improves the world, and in a way that inspires others to reach their dreams and goals and do extraordinary things as well, simply because they do in fact have that power.
The term obligation is almost silly really, because I truly believe that when we give back to our communities and the global community, we all win. The sense of joy that I personally experience when contributing is what gives me the energy to pursue my own goals and ambitions and what makes my personal experience of life fulfilling. So, in terms of obligation, well, maybe we all should be obligated… because even selfishly, giving back is one of the things makes my life as amazing as it is.
